Psychologist in Madrid: Addressing Mental Health

Updated: May 29

Meet the therapist

I have lived and worked abroad for the entirety of my career, therefore i have a great deal of experience in working with expats that come from different backgrounds. I am multilingual and multicultral myself.

My 4-year Gestalt therapy education is certified by EAP (European Association of Psychotherapy), EAGT (European Association for Gestalt Therapy) and NVAGT (Dutch Psychotherapist Association).

Since establishing my private practice in 2016, I specialise in individual and couples therapy, addressing a spectrum of issues.

In addition to my clinical work, I hold a leadership role as Co-Director at the Dutch Institute for Gestalt Psychotherapy in Amsterdam since 2020. In this capacity, I contribute to the advancement of Gestalt Psychotherapy education and actively engage as a trainer for Psychotherapy Students.

Currently residing in Madrid, Spain.

Having been brought up between two cultures has allowed me an in-depth understanding of the Expat experience.

Navigating the complexities of mental health can be daunting for expats and locals alike.

Services Offered by Expats in Therapy, my private practice

At my practice Expats in Therapy, individuals can access a range of services. I work with couples and individuals, online and in person. Though i dont wokr with children, I have worked in an international school for many years, so I am comfortable in suppoting families with multilingual/ multicultural backgrounds.

Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety, with its crippling grip on daily life, affects millions worldwide. I am experienced in working with young adults that strugle with anxiety. I have also seen many clients that struglle with panic attacks during a burn out process, or in a wider depressive experience.

Depression Therapy

Depression, often misunderstood, can cast a shadow over every aspect of life.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma leaves indelible scars on the psyche, affecting every facet of a person's being. I have an interest in working with sexual trauma in all genders. In my years in private practice I have worked with people that have been assaulted, and suffer from teh consequences of that. Often people come to my practice for symptoms of anxiety, and as we establish a relationship, they feel more comfortable to share traumatic ecperiences. I don't push, and i don't invade. I am aware that this is a delicate experience that calls for respect of boundaries and safety.

Online Therapy

Since the pandemic I have been working much much more online. Especially during my move from The Netherlands to Spain, being able to work online has been s gift, because I was able to maintain the relationship with my clients, instead of having to go through the loss of such gently built connections. Online therapy breaks down barriers to care, offering a convenient and confidential platform for seeking support.

Individual Therapy

Individual counseling provides a safe space for self-exploration and growth. Most of my clients reach out to me for support individually.

Couples Therapy

Relationships, while rewarding, can also be fraught with challenges. Couples therapy offers a lifeline for partners seeking to strengthen their bond and resolve conflicts constructively. Couples therapy lasts one hour and a half, and I meet the couples I work with biweekly, or once a month.

Gestalt Therapy Approach

Grounded in the principles of awareness and integration, Gestalt therapy offers a holistic approach to healing. Read more on my website, or let me know if you have any questions.

Expat Experience and Understanding

Having experienced the expat journey firsthand, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities it presents. My multicultural background fosters cultural sensitivity and empathy.

Leadership Role at Dutch Institute for Gestalt Psychotherapy

I am the Co-Director of the Dutch Institute for Gestalt Psychotherapy.

In that role I train groups of therapists to be, and coordinated the institute as well as a team of trainers and colleaugues.
